Ioannis Basdekis

Dr. Ioannis Basdekis is the Director and Head of Research at the Circular Economy Foundation (CEF), specialising in privacy-respecting digital systems, e-accessibility, and circular business models for digital health. He holds a PhD in Electronic Engineering from the University of Kent, an MSc in Computer Science (with Distinction), and a BSc in Applied Mathematics from the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens. His work focuses on the design and evaluation of IT systems that adhere to ‘Privacy by Design’ and inclusivity principles, with applications in digital health and public services. Ioannis has contributed to several EU-funded research projects, including the flagship initiatives DfA@eInclusion, EMBalance, EVOTION, and SMARTBEAR, applying innovation approaches to develop scalable, user-focused digital solutions. His expertise supports the integration of sustainability, data protection, and accessibility into technology design, ensuring systems meet evolving societal needs and regulatory expectations. He has served in advisory roles to the Hellenic Ministry of Health, the National Public Health Organization, and local governments, influencing national strategies on e-government and inclusive digital transformation. He also initiated Hellas’ first national initiative for monitoring web accessibility. With previous research posts at City, University of London, FORTH, and École des Ponts ParisTech, he brings both academic and applied insight to the development of responsible, circular digital infrastructures across Europe.
